How to Care for Your Wicker Outdoor Furniture

As more and more of us create glorious outdoor living spaces, we need to remember that anything we put outside, such as wicker outdoor furniture, needs to be cleaned and cared for.

Whether you have cedar, wrought iron, aluminum, vinyl, or wicker outdoor furniture, it needs to be protected against both the weather and abuse by family and friends.

There are two major types of wicker outdoor furniture. The first is organic wicker. Organic (or natural) wicker is often made from a palm wood called rattan.

The second type of wicker is synthetic wicker, which is made from vinyl or resin strips. Both types are easy to care for and maintain. We suggest the following process for cleaning wicker at least once a season.

Basic care of Wicker Outdoor Furniture

1. Remove the patio cushions, if any.
2. Using a hose or pressure washer, spray off any dirt and grime.
3. If the wicker is especially dirty, wash it further by hand with a warm soap and water mixture. Use a sponge or soft bristle brush as necessary to rub out the embedded dirt.
4. Rinse off the soap with a hose or pressure washer.

Important notes about Outdoor Wicker Furniture

• Natural wicker tends to dry out if you leave it in the sun. Therefore, try to keep your natural wicker outdoor furniture in shady areas such as under trees, umbrellas, or on a shady side of the house. This is true for all wicker patio chairs, tables, and lounges.
• If you decide to repaint your natural wicker, use a spray paint formulated for outdoor wood and wicker. Apply several coats, even on the undersides of the furniture.
• Do not try to repaint vinyl or resin wicker. Spray paints will not adhere to the vinyl or resin and the paint will easily crack and peel off.

No one wants to have to replace his or her wicker outdoor furniture every Spring. Therefore, with a little bit of proper care as noted, you can be one of the many people who enjoy their wicker patio chairs, chaise lounges, and tables for many years!
