Warm up cool nights with outdoor fireplaces, firepits or chimineas

Outdoor fireplaces are the safe alternative to creating a bonfire in your backyard. With a steel mesh fire pit or cast iron chiminea, you can roast marshmallows or even cook hotdogs over an open flame, just as if you’re out on a camping trip with friends or family.

All outdoor fireplaces keep flames contained within a limited area, allowing you the maximum benefit of heat, with little risk of creating an uncontrollable fire in a fire pit or chiminea. Therefore, even if you don’t want to cook food, you can still sit round the fire in Adirondack chairs sipping cider and conversing with friends on a cool night.

Fire Pit Basics

fire pitA fire pit is simply a particular type of outdoor fireplace. Most fire pits are round and come in one of two varieties.

The first variety is the brick or cement version. These fire pits are fully integrated into a brick or cement patio and are wonderful for bonfires and cookouts. The cost of such a fireplace is built into the design of the patio.

If you are not willing to redesign your patio for a brick or cement pit, then you might prefer a portable firepit made of copper, aluminum or steel. These models come in various sizes. Some firepits have wheels and can be easily rolled to a convenient place before igniting the flame. Most are no more than three feet across and three feet tall. Some have mesh screens to diminish the amount of sparks that fly out from a stack of burning logs.

Chiminea Basics

cast iron chimineaChimineas are modern versions of Mexican fireplaces. They look like a miniature chimney and are typically manufactured from either clay, cast iron or cast aluminum.

When choosing a chiminea, our recommendation is to avoid clay models. They require too much maintenance and care for the average homeowner. The clay models, which you can buy at your local home center, are fragile and designed more for attractiveness and low heat.

Cast iron and cast aluminum chimineas are much more durable and able to withstand roaring fires. Some cast iron versions even come with cooking utensils.

Tips for buying outdoor fireplaces, firepits and chimineas

When shopping for outdoor fireplaces, you want to make sure you are getting a safe fire pit or chiminea that will last for several seasons. Portable firepits come in a variety of styles, usually with a copper bottom. Most are fueled by wood logs.

Consider buying online. You will find a wider variety of styles that you won’t find in your local home store. Then, once you get your fireplace roaring, unpack the marshmallows, and start cooking!
