Patio benches provide comfortable outdoor seating and storage

When we think of outdoor benches, most of us tend to think of the metal or wood ones we see in parks and shopping plazas. We never stop to realize all the different kinds of benches that can be categorized as outdoor furniture, or that we could enjoy in our own backyard.

First, there are classic wooden benches. These models are available both with and without backrests. Cedar, oak, and teak are popular construction materials, and are perfect for the outdoors. Place one on your patio with other outdoor furniture, or place it solo in a contemplative spot in your garden. It will add charm and focus to either outdoor living area.

Next is the storage bench. This is a hefty wooden box with a seat built into the lid. Cedar wood models are popular as are pine boxes. The storage container portion can be used for outdoor toys, outdoor furniture covers, and even gas grill supplies. They are great for helping you keep your patio clutter-free.

Finally, there is the potting bench. This is designed primarily for gardeners, but it is not a piece of outdoor furniture to sit on. Instead, it functions more like a workbench, giving you a waist-high tabletop surface on which to prepare flowers or vegetables for planting. Typically they have a shelf or two under the workbench, and at least one narrower shelf above the work surface. Potting benches are almost always made of wood. Some even come with wheels for portability.

If you are looking for seating only, choose classic benches of wood or metal. If you need storage, look for a storage bench. If you need an outdoor work surface, choose a potting bench.

Should you buy finished or unfinished benches?

Whether or not you buy a finished or unfinished bench really boils down to personal preference. Unfinished versions give you the opportunity to stain the furniture to your liking. Finished benches arrive ready to be put into use, and only require periodic cleaning like your other outdoor furniture.

Regardless of what style you choose, wood benches are a wonderfully affordable way to add extra seating, storage space or workspace to your outdoor furniture collection.
